Meet-ups are get-togethers aimed at attendees who share something in common. This could be an interest that reflects personal values, career goals, activism, identity, etc. Meet-ups are absolutely ideal for networking photos. They are generally led by a team of organizers who may make a presentation to the attendees.
Engage the meet up organizers (or SXSW Staff with a yellow staff lanyard) in the room and let them know you’re shooting for SXSW. Read the room and use your best judgement for when to interact with attendees.
