Russian Collusion Update: What’s Really Going On

By Mikayla Rochelle

The talk of Russian Collusion has been in the American news cycle for over a year now, yet it still seems like we are no closer to the bottom of exactly what happened. Robert Mueller, a lawyer for the FBI, has been leading the investigation of the Trump election campaign since July of 2017, and are no closer to answers. What has been uncovered though, is that Russia bought Political Facebook ads during the 2016 election to try and sway voters. There was also minor communication with small members of Trump’s campaign team and Russian officials, and several of Trump’s officials have faced intense scrutiny due to these encounters.

The biggest new pieces of evidence are undoubtedly the Steele Dossier, also known as the Trump-Russia Dossier (a dossier is “a collection of documents about a particular event, person, or subject). This particular dossier has to do with- you guessed it- Trump and Russia. It was first released by Buzzfeed in early January, and they claimed that the dossier was proof of Trump’s “deep ties with Russia”.

The dossier contains several allegations of Russian Collusion (basically, illegal actions/conspiracies have possibly occurred with Russia). The dossier contains 17 memos written by Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence agent, who investigated the Trump-Russia collusion. Some of these allegations have been proven, some disproven; but many are still up in the air.

So here is where we are now. There’s a lot of smoke, but where is it coming from? Where is the fire? As per the norm with investigations, the Mueller investigation has been pretty quiet; the American media or citizens don’t know the full extent of what they’ve uncovered. President Trump has openly stated that he would be completely fine going on record and under oath in front of Mueller’s investigative team. Contrary to that support of the investigation, this summer, in the infancy of the investigation, Trump wanted to fire Mueller but was advised by top White House lawyers not to, as they believed this would trigger national suspicion. It could just be a lot of smoke, but even if it’s just a little fire, something has to be burning.

Every four years, the whole world participates in what mankind has participated in for centuries: the Olympics. In modern history, the Olympics have been held since 1896. Every four years we hold the summer olympics, and every four years we hold the winter Olympics: resulting in Olympic games every 2 years.

This year the Winter Olympics were held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Top placers were in 1st Norway, 2nd place Germany, 3rd place Canada, and the United States in 4th. The U.S. sent our best athletes, including Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Shaun White, Adam Rippon, and Alex and Maia Shibutani.

The U.S. won 9 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals on the world stage, for a total of 23 medals, placing us in 4th. While this hasn't been our most successful Olympic tenure, the Olympics still has united us with the rest of the world, in the tradition 122 years strong.
