Homecoming

By Savannah Rosenfield

Homecoming. When you hear that word what comes to mind? A dance? A football game? Well at Swanton Schools when students hear the word "homecoming" they mostly think of the activities that go along with it. Swanton students get the chance to dress in a variety of different outfits they would not wear on a regular basis, make decorations for their hallway, and ride on a float at the end of the week, all in celebration of school pride.

This year, the theme for Homecoming was "Around the World in Seven Days". Each class competed to win points through spirit days, kickball games, and the end of the week pep rally and dodge-ball tournament. As a celebration of the alumni of Swanton High School and of the students to come, there is a dance where people can wear a nice dress or suit and tie, and enjoy free food and music on the following Saturday. This year, Homecoming went off without a hitch and people enjoyed themselves.

This year the students were more involved in the decorating and dress up days than they have ever been. Homecoming is always anticipated by people in the school and will be celebrated for many years to come.

On October 28th, Swanton celebrated its 8th annual Halloween Hoopla. The Halloween Hoopla is a family friendly festival, held on Main Street to bring the town together for the spookiest night of the year. The festivities started at 3pm and ended at 5pm. They had free hot dogs and popcorn. Also, the Swanton Fire Department handed out hot chocolate and donuts. There were bouncy houses, cookie decorating, a straw maze, pedal cars, and candy for the kids to enjoy. There was also a performance by Daryl Jervis Dance Studio dancing to "Thriller" by Michael Jackson: an event favorite. The local businesses handed out candy to all the children who dressed up in their Halloween costumes. The weather may have been cold, but it didn’t deter people from coming out to enjoy the fun!
