enVision Mathematics Topic 16
5th Grade; May (2 weeks); 3rd Trimester
Topic Title(s):
Geometric Measurement: Classify Two-Dimensional Figures
Prepared Graduates:
MP3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP7. Look for and make use of structure.
Standard(s):
4. Geometry
The highlighted evidence outcomes are the priority for all students, serving as the essential concepts and skills. It is recommended that the remaining evidence outcomes listed be addressed as time allows, representing the full breadth of the curriculum.
Students Can (Evidence Outcomes):
5.G.B. Geometry: Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.
Explain that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles. (CCSS: 5.G.B.3)
Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties. (CCSS: 5.G.B.4)
Observe and analyze attributes of two-dimensional figures to classify them. (Entrepreneurial Skills: Inquiry/Analysis)
Critique the reasoning of others’ classifications of two-dimensional shapes. (MP3)
Strategically use measurement tools to help improve the classification of shapes. (MP5)
Look for and use attributes of two-dimensional shapes to classify the shapes in a hierarchy of figures. (MP7)
Inquiry Questions
How can you use the words “always,” “sometimes,” and “never” to develop a classification of two-dimensional figures?
Coherence Connections
This expectation is in addition to the major work of the grade.
In Grade 4, students draw and identify lines and angles and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
Academic Vocabulary & Language Expectations:
Equilateral triangle, isosceles triangle, scalene triangle, right triangle, acute triangle, obtuse triangle, trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square
Assessments:
Instructional Resources & Notes:
enVision Mathematics Topic 16
Additional enVision Mathematics Resources
Let's Investigate! Patch It Together (TE) (supports Lessons 16-2, 16-3)
Additional Math Games: Geometry (additional materials and preparation may be required)
Tier 1 Intervention & Supports (i-Ready Tools for Instruction):
Tier 1 Intervention: None since this Unit Plan is in addition to the major work of the grade
Advanced Differentiation:
Advanced students should also demonstrate mastery with the content in the following lessons to provide access to advanced mathematics courses in middle school:
enVision Mathematics Topic 17: Step Up to Grade 6
Lesson 17-10: Find Areas of Parallelograms and Rhombuses
