enVision Mathematics Topic 16
3rd Grade; April – May (4 weeks); 3rd Trimester
Topic Title(s):
Solve Perimeter Problems
Prepared Graduates:
MP1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP4. Model with mathematics.
Standard(s):
3. Data, Statistics, and Probability
The highlighted evidence outcomes are the priority for all students, serving as the essential concepts and skills. It is recommended that the remaining evidence outcomes listed be addressed as time allows, representing the full breadth of the curriculum.
Students Can (Evidence Outcomes):
3.MD.D. Measurement & Data: Geometric measurement: Recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguish between linear and area measures.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters. (CCSS: 3.MD.D.8)
Make sense of the relationship between area and perimeter by calculating both for rectangles of varying sizes and dimensions. (MP1)
Model perimeters of objects in the world with polygons and the sum of their side lengths. (MP4)
Inquiry Questions
What are all the pairs of side lengths that can create a rectangle with the same area, such as 12 square units?
Is it possible for two rectangles to have the same area but different perimeters?
Is it possible for two rectangles to have the same perimeter but different areas?
Coherence Connections
This expectation is in addition to the major work of the grade.
In Grade 2, students measure and estimate lengths in standard units.
In Grade 3, this expectation connects to understanding concepts of area, relating area to multiplication and to addition, and solving problems involving the four operations.
In Grade 4, students solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.
Academic Vocabulary & Language Expectations:
Perimeter, equilateral triangle
