Oil Pastel Color Study

David the mirage

The subject of this masterpiece is my best friend's dad, David. I chose to paint this picture of David in the golf cart because he looks to me like a desert wanderer, a nomad. His chinstrap beard and polarized sunglasses really help to contrast against his sunburnt complexion. The sweaty rag draped over his head really adds to the desert nomad aesthetic.

To construct this fever dream artwork I gridded the reference photo then made a matching grid on a blank piece of paper. For each coordinating square I would scribble a layer of oil pastel with the matching colors then blend them using a tortillion.

If I were to redo this piece I would choose a different reference photo, one that doesn't have as many rounded edges. I would most likely use a landscape photo instead.
