9"x12"

Artist statement:

The main idea that guided this artwork was well, the prompt. But why did I choose this prompt? "Draw  a mermaid balancing a heart-shaped flower on its nose in a fishbowl." I chose this prompt because I felt like I could be very creative with it, and I have always loved mermaids. I also immediately had the idea to use bleeding heart flowers for the heart-shaped flower. I grew up with these in my garden, so they were quite familiar.

For this piece, I used a piece of paper provided by Mrs. Medsker. I ended up cutting a good two inches off of the length to create a space my drawing would fill. I used a 2H pencil to sketch out the drawing vaguely and then went over some details with a black Sharpie pen. I used a 2H pencil because it is very light and easy to erase if you decide to make a change to your sketch. The Sharpie pen adds depth to certain elements when used in clean lines. To add color, I used colored pencils of different varieties to enhance everything.

First, I sketched out my drawing in pencil to make sure I had my vision down. I decided to put the fish bowl in the center of the page as it is the main focus of the drawing. Then I chose colored pencils because I felt as if color was needed, but did not want it to be as bold as a marker would be. I chose to use a black pen to trace and outline certain parts of the drawing in order for them to pop more and look neater. Lastly, I ended up cutting two inches off of the length of the paper in order to make my drawing fill the space. I felt that if my fishbowl was larger, I could have used the whole paper. But I wanted to have room on the page for other elements, such as the childish scribbles hung on the wall. But making it the size I did, the drawing simply did not need that extra space. By decreasing the size my drawing looked finished and full.
