Artists statement.

The inspiration behind this project was to create a collage and then color-match and recreate the collage as a painting. For the collage, I wanted to pick images that portrayed something I loved; or something important to me.

The materials I used for this painting were acrylic on canvas.

To start, I went through several magazines at home and at school to cut out images or colors. Then, I photocopied my collage and used a tracing board to trace the general shapes to ensure the painting would match the composition of the collage. After taping a border, I began using my color checklist and mixing paints to match the color. I started with the solid colors on the right-hand side. Then, I moved on to the mountain photo, making sure to add texture when it was wet because the paint blends easier. The mountain was difficult because of the specific shades of grey that make up each highlight or edge of the rock. It took a lot of greys for it to come together. The next thing that I moved on to was the wave, and I did the puzzle pieces as I went. I used a dotting technique to get the texture of the wave, specifically the white water of the wave, where it crashes. This was the hardest part, as the texture is very specific. Overall, I feel like I learned a lot about technique and texture through this painting and am happy with how it turned out.
