Colored pencil and marker on drawing paper.

Artist's Statement

The main idea was to create a piece of art that would inspire and encourage people to donate organs and tissue, and to check yes on their driver's license to do so.  I wanted to incorporate something that I loved to do into my drawing. I love skiing, so I chose to make this my main focus. I remembered  a photo of my friend skiing that I had and was inspired to use it because it was personal to me and also was exactly what I wanted to draw.

I used colored pencils and markers on drawing paper. I chose to use colored pencils because I knew I could get finer details in and blend fairly well. The details were especially important with the snow. I chose to use a marker for the writing because I wanted the message to pop and look clean but bold.

The first step I took was printing out the photo I used for reference. Then, I used a light board to trace out the skier in order to get the positioning perfect and to make it easier on myself in the long run. I followed up with colored pencils, and a colorless blender in order to make it smooth and match colors. The hardest part was the background. At first, I wanted to sort of blur the trees/background to create a cleaner slate for the writing. This did not exactly go as planned. I did not know the correct technique to use to do this, so I ended up just trying to use the blender, which ended up in a bit of a streaky mess. After this, I  used a grey colored pencil to add details to the snow. Finally, I positioned the words to stagger throughout the poster so that they would be easy to read and prominent.
