Artist statement:

The idea behind the artwork was focused on negative space/contrast for all of these pieces.

The main materials used were a 2H pencil, a black Sharpie gel pen, watercolors, and colored pencils.

The sketches were done in 2h pencil because it easily erases mistakes and is a great tool for sketching. Sharpie gel pen gives a bold and clean line, perfect for creating patterns; like in the Zentangle project. I used watercolors because I like their smooth look and the wide range of textures that can be created.  Colored pencils allowed me to create small details while also focusing on texture. I found them helpful, especially in the Negative Space Leave project, to create a bark look on the trees. I would like to expand out of these materials as I know there are many that I have not even tried.

All of these materials/projects made me more confident in realizing that bold artwork is good artwork. Contrast is important and I think I am finally starting to grasp what exactly that means... at least in my mind.
