Artists Statement.

I was inspired by orca whales for this project and the assignment to create a sculpture out of magazines, trash, or other materials. I wanted to make an orca whale because not only do I love the ocean, but I have always thought they were cool animals. They are often called "killer whales" but I think they are beautiful and cool creatures.

The materials used for this project were paper, masking tape, metal can, magazines, cardboard and hot glue.

To begin, I used the  'snowball' technique to create a general shape of my animal. I chose this because I knew I wanted to make it 3D and I thought the process would be fun. Then, I used masking tape to secure the shape and provide a better surface for materials to stick to. I used carboard for the tail, fin and the mouth. All of these limb like things needed to be secure and stick out, so the best option was to cut out shapes in cardboard and hot glue them on. After that, I cut out black magazine images, and black cardboard. Looking back, I think it might look cleaner if I chose one of these materials instead of doing both. It would look more organized. I attached the black pieces all over the body and then cut out white clippings to make the belly white. After glueing them on,  I wanted to use a plastic bottle to add shine and as a structural component. I cut it into a few pieces and attached them on. Finally I moved onto the mouth. I struggled with this because it was hard to glue/ surface the inside of the mouth as it was not wide enough for my hands. I wish I had surfaced it and THEN attached it to the rest of the body. I used scissors in some instances to push paper, with glue on the back, into the mouth and attach it. Then, I used the inside of an Izzie can to make the teeth. I was inspired to use this because of its shiny inside and stability. Lastly, I went through and removed any glue strings and layered on some more black clippings where the tape was showing through. Overall, I am happy with how it turned out. I do wish I had chosen some differnt materials to make it look a bit cleaner.
