In this project we were given the opportunity to choose groups who had the same interest or passion in a world problem. My group decided to focus on a problem that we could fix in our community. We thought about problems that teens faced with a lot in their lives. We finally made the decision to focus on stress in teens due to finals week. We focused mainly on the problem in schools near Marin asking students what stress was like for them.
After we each gathered data and annotated three articles we began to develop a solution to the problem facing countless High Schoolers. We realized that people don't get enough sleep, food, water, rest and break to relax when its the week to prepare for finals. So we decided to create a period called R.E.L.A.X to help students receive all of these things in the middle of the day to help them relive their stress. It is still the same amount of hours in a day and it only takes off about 7 minutes from each class. This period would be only on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays during dead week.
After coming up with the solution my team and I new we had to figure out a way to get this approved by the school. So we decided to talk to Mrs. Warren the vice principal to see what she had in mind. She said that we needed to have all of the teachers and staff approve, go with teachers contract, have Principal agree and make sure the district agreed. After the conversation we implemented her ideas into our presentation and made sure the board would approve.
Engineering Design Cycle:
For this project it was challenging coming up with a world problem that you had to try and fix with a prototype. In the begging my group picked a world problem that already had a solution. We were far into the project when we realized this so it was hard to figure out what we were going to do. After collaborating very well together we picked a new problem to attempt to fix. We split the work up evenly so it went faster. After we all re annotated our team talked about our research findings. Every member in the group got along so this helped with efficiency and the quality of our work. My group and I also did a great job on critical thinking for this project. We questioned if our problem was prominent in the world and we also discovered facts and data. When making the slideshow we justified our research by backing it up with quotes from articles and data we collected from our school. By working together and critical thinking we were able to get past starting later than we wanted to.
Some things I need to work on for the next project is having a better attitude when it comes to things not working out the way I would like it to be. For example, when I realized that some sunscreens were already made without the harmful toxin oxybenzone I shut down and immediately thought we were so far behind. I kept reminding myself we would never get the work even though this project was about going at your own pace and following the gantt chart. I wasn't angry and didn't take it out at my team members but I did make it hard on myself. I should have realized that their was plenty of time left to make a great presentation. I can't stress about getting an A every time. Doing your best work will always be enough. I will constantly remind myself when I start to be paranoid again. For the next project I will make sure that I work on my emotions so I can have a better time and enjoy the project instead of being stressed out.
