For this unit we were asked to write five Tell The World poems. Each poem was a different theme that involved different skills of writing. We also filled out a poetry packet to help us learn/understand what figurative and literary writing was and how to incorporate it into our poems. For each poem we got around a week to write it and make it the best it could be. Then we prepared two of our best poems to read to the class for the poetry slam. The poems we chose to read for the poetry slam needed to capture human emotion, point of view and poetic language. Then in the performance we needed to make sure we spoke clearly, projected our voice, had an appropriate pace and lastly look up while reading .
This poetry unit has helped me become better with communication. Communication is all about writing, speaking and listening which is all key components when you are doing narrative writing. The first skill I really improved on was writing. I now have many different techniques to use when trying to make my writing more interesting. I learned that it is important to use figurative language and always make sure you have tone and a theme when writing. The second component was speaking. I practiced this by speaking in front of the class in the poetry slam. When I went and read my poems I was very loud and had many expressions. I faced my fear by having the courage to go up and share something personal. Sometimes I have trouble listening to others and not talking to other people. So during the poetry slam I had to listen carefully and really enjoy my other classmates poems. It was hard not to talk to my friends around me but I knew I had to be respectful sense everyone was respectful when I shared mine. Writing the five poems allowed me to open up and not be sacred to share personal things. It helped me not to be so shy and timid. Two areas I need to improve on that I messed up in the poetry slam is looking at the audience more and not stumbling on words. The day before I need to go over my poem and make sure I have it memorized so I can really focus on making eye contact with the audience. The second thing is I have to slow down so I don't mess up on words that I could easily pronounce. Another thing I need to fix for next time is making sure I prepare my second poem. I didn't think I would make it into the second round so my second poem was not as strong. Overall this unit has helped my writing and it was lots fun.
