The build a band project was a project where you got into a group of three to create three different instruments. Each instrument had to be different, one a percussion instrument, one a string instrument and the other a wind instrument. Each instrument needed to be able to play an octave which is eight different notes that are C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C5. Then you needed to decide which key you wanted to play whether it was a c3, c4, c5, c6 and so on. Each member built their own instrument by hand and learned the concepts to making an instrument.
Due to covid-19 we were not able to fully complete this project because school was shut down. While we were in school this was a really fun project that involved each member of the team to work on there own instrument and help others. I did not get to complete my instrument but I learned how to begin to create a wind instrument and learn how to create sound. We did finish the wind instrument and put a reed on it so you could make vibrations. Unfortunately we did not finish the string instrument and only created the sound box and handle for it. Throughout the time we had during this project I learned more about vibrations in instruments and how they work.
Frequency: The number of vibrations (waves) per second
Period: Amount of time per wave (or per vibration cycle)
Amplitude: Height of the wave from the mid line
Wave length: Distance of one wave crest to crest or compression to compression
Wave Speed: How fast the wave travels (velocity)
Transverse: Distance between them squared. Particle motion is perpendicular to direction of wave motion
Longitudinal Wave: Particles compress and rarify as wave energy moves along (parallel).
Electromagnetic Spectrum: The range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends.
One thing my group and I did well on in this project was being able to communication with each other. In the beginning of the project I was able to share my ideas with no judgement. Instead of being rude and putting down an idea I gave constructive feedback to make sure we were all communicating nicely to each other. Everyday we talked with one another and made goals for the day and everyone always knew what their job was. Then the pandemic hit and we weren't able to work on it together or see each other, but this didn't affect us. We made a group chat to communicate and we face timed and made a google doc in order to create the song.
Another thing I learned and became better at was critical thinking. It was hard for me to design and get my xylophone to create a lot of sound. I tested out different types of woods and metals to see what would work the best and create vibrations. Instead of becoming frustrated I persevered and thought of a new way to approach things. With the help of my team members I finally cut out the shape of the xylophone and screwed everything together. Then I helped make the ukulele and we had made a plan before so this was easier and didn't involve that much of critical thinking. Even though we didn't get to finish our instruments we still found a way to write up a doc and make a really great song.
One thing I need to keep working on for the next project is learning how to be a better conscientious learner. When looking back at what we accomplished I realized that I should have had better time management. I focused too much on making my instrument perfect and that took up a lot of time. When I looked at my classmates instruments I thought I needed to fix mine to make it better. But this was not a good decision because when everyone was mostly done with their instruments I was starting to put the bands and nails on. I also made goals for my team members but not for myself.
I feel like for this project I didn't really have anything else I could work on that fell into one of the six C's. If I were to chose one I would say I could work on collaboration. Sometimes I would get a little off track and ask other groups to help me instead of my own team. I can always work on my attitude towards others. I need to be less bossy and let other people do what they feel is best. I am a little controlling and I am always trying to work on this.
