RUBE GOLDBERG
A Rube Goldberg machine is a complex machine that is designed to carry out simple tasks. This machine works with a series of chain reactions that transfer energy into other parts of the machine such as pulleys, levers, buttons, and more to carry out one simple task. This usually involves a chain reaction and is named after the American cartoonist and inventor, Rube Goldberg.
What was the goal?
Over the course of 9-11 work days I had a group of a total of 4 people and we worked on a board to make a Rude Goldberg machine.Our theme was spider-man Vs Doc Ock. We picked this theme because we took a vote.
Rough Draft Blueprint Final Blueprint Digital Blueprint
Acceleration(a)- Rate of change of velocity (speed up or slow down)
Velocity (v)- Rate of change of position in a direction
Force (f) - A push or a pull on an object( can result in a change in motion)
MA real (MA) - How much easier (less force) a tool makes to finish]
MA Ideal (MA) - How much easier you have to push when using a tool
Work (W) - The amount of energy that is put into doing something
KE - Kinetic energy
PE - Potential energy
Incline plane (a slope ramp)
A Pulley (2 construction pile with a cut to allow the string to move)
lever( a ramp that tilts when activated by pulley)
Screw (A funnel)
Wheel and Axle ( a wood wheel that moves when the ball falls)
Wedge (The pencil)
Velocity = change distance/ change of time
acceleration = Velocity/ change of time
Force = (Mass) (acceleration)
Work= (force) (distance)
calculations on slides 9 through 19 on my Rude Goldberg presentation
This was the first project of the year and for being the first project I think we did a really good job. Although there were many different aspects that my group and I could have done better. For example I would say we needed more thought out communication or better collaboration .This project really showed me that I am good at supporting others with their needs or ideas but lacking in coming up with ideas of my own but over the cores of the project I found surprise of myself giving ideas to the group.
This project and class really got me to try new things and learn things I didn't know.This project also opened me up to talk to old classmates I have had but never really gotten the opportunity to talk to until now. During the project we really focused on getting stuff down on the board and solving our way through it (not the best way) because we ended up getting a smaller board than everyone else so our measurements were a little off so we did with what we could.I would say the pulley and the wheel + axle where the hardest parts because we made the pulley out of PVC pipe and the string would keep getting caught in it. On one of our last days to find calculations and practice presenting one of our PVC pipes went missing so we need to start cutting again. With the wheel + axle it wouldn't stay in its place, it would fall or it wouldn't spin like intended.
Our goal was to make a Rube Goldberg machine and I think my teammates and I did a good job there were ups and down but overall we learned to give a helping hand and communicate what we need.My goal for my next project this year is to give more ideas or try to help more in areas that I am somewhat proficient so my next partners doesn't feel alone.
