My group and I decided that our video was going to be about how to kick a field goal. The task was to first find a sports action, research and analyze the components to that action, find the physics for the sport, and film and edit your video. We overcame many challenges within the project. One being we had to change who was going to be the one kicking the field goal because they were inconsistent. These changes were also positive because if we kept our first kicker we would have never knew about Kate's talent of kicking and maybe she could join the football team as a kicker someday. Throughout the project I learned many different things I did not know previously. I really enjoyed doing this project and it was a great way to end the project with everybody getting together and watching all the films and seeing all the different ideas.
Our video is shows how to kick a field goal and the physics involved to do so. The video consists of clips of Kate and Noah kicking field goals from all different camera angles. The video also consists of the calculations fro the physics of the the sport. Some calculations we did were horizontal velocity, vertical velocity, total velocity, and the force of impact.
We decided to go out to the football field as much as we could and get a lot of filming done. We then took all of the clips and picked the best ones to insert into the videos. Aside from the videos we took we also took some clips of NFL kickers making and missing field goals. With the clips we also added subtitles so people could also read the steps to becoming a better kicker.
For this project we had to find different calculations for our sports action. The four calculations need for our video were force of impact, horizontal velocity, vertical velocity, and total velocity. The first calculation we found was horizontal velocity. The equation to find horizontal velocity is Velocity horizontal is equal to distance horizontal divided by time. We found that the horizontal velocity of the kick was 7.31 meters per second. The second calculation we did was velocity vertical. The equation for finding velocity vertical is Velocity vertical is equal to acceleration due to gravity multiplied by time of fall. The vertical velocity of the kick was 20.58 meters per second. To find the total velocity we used Pythagorean theorem which is horizontal velocity squared plus vertical velocity squared is equal to C squared or total velocity. The total velocity for our kick was 21.83 meters per second. The final calculation we had to find was force of impact. The equation for force of impact is mass times velocity is equal to force multiplied by time. The force of impact we got was 54.575 newtons.
Overall I really enjoyed doing this project and I would like to do it again and try a different sport to research and learn the physics of. We overcame many challenges and over the time of the project we got to know about the others in our group. For example Noah and I did not know that Kate had such a good kick. Maybe next year should could be the kicker for the San Marin football team.
This project helped me understand physics a lot more than previous to this activity. I really enjoyed learning about physics in this way because it gave me something to relate to. For example I like to watch football and sometimes I wonder why the kicker misses a field goal or extra point. Now I know more about the sport than before and I understand the physics too. The film night was really fun too. I felt as if we were all actors and directors and we were showing our movies to friends and family. I really liked watching my peers videos too. I got to learn more about things I did not before and it was really interesting comparing the velocity or force from impact from different sport actions. Some things that I may want to work on is becoming more involved in the projects. I would like to be able to look back a project and be able to say that I took charge of my group and was a leader.
I really enjoyed this project because many people can relate to the topics we are discussing. These videos can also improve our way of playing sports. It would be a smart idea to share these ideas with either players or coaches of the sport. I really benefited from the process of finding the calculations for our sport action and making and editing the video.
