Within this unit we learned how to annotate a poem, we learned what is figurative language, what sound sound devices were, what is the speaker or voice of a poem or passage, and what is the tone and theme of a poem. During the unit we had to write five poems and in the we had a poetry slam where we would pick one of our poems and read it aloud to the class and other teachers. The five poems we did were about telling the world who you are, telling the world about a special place, tell the world what you think, tell the world what you love, and tell the world how you feel. The requirements of the poem was that the poem had to be more than 12 lines and had to have a certain amount of sound device or metaphors, or similes.
I really enjoyed this poetry unit. Before we started the unit and we were on the previous unit I heard we were going to start poetry soon and I thought it would be boring but it was quite fun and interesting. Through the poems you write you may learn something about yourself or you can relate to other peoples poems. In our poems we were writing about things we knew very well and were expressing ourselves and how we felt within the poem. I believed the best part was at the end because of the poetry slam. The price was a free movie ticket if you won within the class and the reward if you won throughout the other periods and other classes was a larger prize. I think that because there was rewards people really got into their poems and we heard a lot of very good ones and some you could relate to. I decided to read my tell the world how you feel poem which was about courage. I really enjoyed the whole poetry unit and it was a great way to end the unit with an event like a poetry slam because I think the majority of the class really got into it.
