Requirements
The list below gives an overview of university entry requirements and how the IB and VIS Diplomas may afford access to these.
Please note that the information provided here is not comprehensive, and all students are encouraged to make an appointment with Ms Rance or Mr Duff, our University counsellors, to discuss their individual needs.
Further information on how the IB Diploma is recognised at universities in countries around the world can be found here.
Austria - Austrian national universities will require either the Austrian Matura Equivalence or the IB Diploma for entry. Austrian universities have not preferenced one Maths track over another for entry.
United Kingdom - UK universities will generally require the IB Diploma, with specific courses and course results at Higher Level. These requirements vary by university and course of study, and students are encouraged to research these. Some UK universities will accept students with the VIS Diploma alone, particularly for Foundation courses.
Germany - German national universities will require the IB Diploma with specific subject requirements. These include one HL subject being Maths or a traditional Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). For science-related courses German universities generally require Maths at HL from either track.
United States - US universities will generally require only the VIS Diploma + SAT/ACT scores, although an IB Diploma may be considered a bonus for admissions committees. Top US universities will require either AP Subjects or the IB Diploma.
Canada - Canadian national universities will generally require the IB Diploma, although some may accept students with the VIS Diploma + SAT scores. Canadian universities will generally require Maths Analysis (SL or HL) or Maths Applications (HL) for courses with Mathematics as a prerequisite.
Netherlands - Dutch national universities will require the IB Diploma, although some Hogescholen (Universities of Applied Sciences) accept the VIS Diploma alone.
Some Dutch universities will require a specific level of Maths. Please check the university website.
More information can be found on individual university websites or at the IB's recognition website.
