IB Diploma Points

IB Diploma Candidates pursuing the IB Diploma can earn up to 45 total "points" from the results of their coursework and examinations.

Candidates require 24 points to earn the IB Diploma (please see more information on Passing Requirements in the next section). Only roughly 0.3% of candidates worldwide earn the full 45 points each year.

Course Points

Each SL and HL course is graded on a scale of 1 (min) to 7 (max). Across the 6 courses of the diploma, this yields a total of 42 possible points.

Candidates earn these points through final formal examinations at the end of Grade 12 and coursework completed in non-examination conditions throughout Grades 11 and 12. The distribution of weighting between examinations and coursework varies by each course, though examinations generally make up 50%-80% of a subject grade.
