Austrian Matura Equivalence
All students interested in finding out more about the Austrian Matura equivalence are strongly advised to seek the counsel of our Austrian Liaison Officer, Ms. Ursula Perstel-Galli.
Our current information / practice indicates that Austrian Universities (Uni Wien, etc.) will accept the IB Diploma without the Austrian Matura for entry. However, some students may still wish to have their programme fulfill the requirements to be recognised by the Austrian authorities as equivalent to the Matura.
Students qualify for Matura equivalence based upon their final externally marked IB course grades. The requirements are;
Six subjects, with 3 at Higher Level and 3 at Standard Level
The total number of points from these 6 subjects must at least be 24
No subject grade can be lower than a 3
In addition, students wishing to obtain Matura equivalence must have successfully achieved the following:
All subjects taught in the VIS curriculum in Grades 9 and 10 (including 3 separate sciences) receiving Grade 3 or above in each of their end of year school reports
A third language taught as part of the VIS curriculum for at least four years up to and including Grade 10 with level two objectives being reached (or take external exams or an IB Course in the third language) receiving a Grade 3 or above
Additionally, In Grades 11 and 12 students must study:
Austrian History and Austrian Geography as additional courses
German, English, Mathematics and one Science from Biology, Chemistry, or Physics ( referred to as classical science)
Students fulfilling these requirements may earn Austrian Matura Equivalence alongside the IB and/or VIS Diplomas.
