OBTAINING A LICENSE

To legally drive in Japan, you will need to obtain a SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) licence. In Japan, drivers drive on the left side of the road, which means that the steering wheel is on the right side of the car. Road signs are also different in Japan.

The average price for a used car is $2000- $5000.

Each year drivers must purchase road tax which is approximately $75.00. Every two years, drivers must undergo a car inspection and renew Japanese Compulsory Insurance.The cost of the JCI process can range from $500-$1000 depending on the age, condition, and amount of work needed on your vehicle.Drivers must also purchase liability insurance that is renewed every year. Bring in a letter from your current insurance showing no accidents for 3 years for a discount.
