OBTAINING A LICENSE
To legally drive in Japan, you will need to obtain a SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) license.
To obtain a SOFA License, you will need to complete the Misawa Air Base Online Drivers Course Joint Knowledge Online (JKO)
Military Members, Dependents, Civilians on SOFA Status must take the training online up to 60 days prior to arriving at Misawa to drive on or off base.
Members who have a Common Access Card can login to the JKO Website via their CAC. Spouses/dependents will need to register an account on the website. After the account is created the steps to finding the course are the same.
Upon completion of the course members will print out the Certificate and report to Pass & Registration for 4EJ Issue.

PURCHASING A VEHICLE
There are several ways to purchase a vehicle in Misawa. Cars, trucks, and vans are often posted for sale on Misawa resale pages on FB. Additionally, there a used car lot located near the Misawa Club and a verity of used car dealerships off-base. The average price for a used car is $2000- $5000.
ROAD TAX
Each year drivers must purchase road tax which is approximately $75.00. Every two years, drivers must undergo a car inspection and renew Japanese Compulsory Insurance.The cost of the JCI process can range from $500-$1000 depending on the age, condition, and amount of work needed on your vehicle. Drivers must also purchase liability insurance that is renewed every year. Bring in a letter from your current insurance showing no accidents for 3 years for a discount.
