Middle school students can use many devices but would recommend one that uses Chrome or Google apps loaded. If you have a Mac, Safari will let you download Chrome. If your student will be using an iPhone or iPad, they will need to load apps such as Google Classroom, Drive, Docs, and Slides. If a student is using a PC, then Chrome is still the preferred browser which can be downloaded from any browser. If the student’s device uses Google Play, the store has a Google Classroom app and any app needed to be successful with Google such as Google Classroom, Drive, Docs, and Slides. Please refer to the Google Classroom section under Families.

Below are those telecommunications companies that are offering services during this Corona virus period:

Comcast COVID-19 response: offers free WiFi for 2 months to low income families plus all Xfinity hot-spots are free to the public during this time

Charter Free Internet offer for 2 months

AT&T COVID-19 response: offers open hot-spots, unlimited data to existing customers, and $10/month plans to low income families

Verizon COVID-19 response: no special offers, but following the FCC agreement.

Sprint COVID-19 response: follows FCC agreement, provides unlimited data to existing customers, and, starting Tuesday, 3/17/2020, will allow all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge (I expect others will follow).

T-Mobile COVID-19 response: follows FCC agreement, plus unlimited data to existing customers, and, coming soon, will allow all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge (I expect others will follow)

Spectrum is offering 60 days free internet service to new customers. Families call Spectrum at 844-488-8395. The wait time was going to be 45 minutes, so you have the option to have them call you back, this is what I opted to do. It took Spectrum over an hour to call back due to the volume of calls they were receiving.

The family will call and they will give Spectrum their address to confirm that service is available to their home address. If this is an area that Spectrum services, they will do the installation for free, the modem is free and they will receive 60 days of free internet service. After the 60 days, the family can cancel (they can also cancel at any time) or will be charged the introductory rate fee.
