The school has a long tradition of outreach and care for the marginalised in our society, starting with the education of girls who often were not entitled to attend to school. Since the arrival of the Daughters of the Cross at St Philomena’s in 1893, their mission focused sharply on those in most need and this mission remains today. Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion work in the school, known in Latin as ‘Imago Dei’ which means ‘Made in the Image of God’, aims to ensure that each member of the community is afforded the dignity and respect they deserve, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation or disability. As we move into the third year of our targeted work, the following areas have been identified as particularly pertinent to our school setting: Racial Solidarity, Human Love and Disability. These areas will be developed and led by staff and student Steering Committees.
During the Month of October every year group has participated in liturgies celebrating Black History Month. Students created the liturgy which consisted of a poem by Mary Angelou, “A brave and startling truth”, reflective bidding prayers, information on Saint Simon of Cyrene and beautiful singing by students in Year 12.
