Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at St Philomena's
Welcome to our Imago Dei dedicated site.
The school has a long tradition of outreach and care for the marginalised in our society, starting with the education of girls who often were not entitled to attend to school. Since the arrival of the Daughters of the Cross at St Philomena’s in 1893, their mission focused sharply on those in most need and this mission remains today. Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion work in the school, known in Latin as ‘Imago Dei’ which means ‘Made in the Image of God’, aims to ensure that each member of the community is afforded the dignity and respect they deserve, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation or disability. As we move into the third year of our targeted work, the following areas have been identified as particularly pertinent to our school setting: Racial Solidarity, Human Love and Disability. These areas will be developed and led by staff and student Steering Committees.
What is Imago Dei?
Imago Dei is the latin for 'made in the image and likeness of God'. In our school, this is the name given to the work which relates to helping recognise that all students and staff are created, loved and cared for by God. Therefore, it follows that if we are truly to reflect God's image, then we too must love, care and respect everyone in our diverse community.
What is Imago Dei trying to achieve?
To ensure that all students and staff have equal and fair access to opportunities and support whilst at school.
To ensure that the diversity of the student and staff body is acknowledged, reflected and celebrated.
To ensure ensure that all students and staff are included and belong to school life.
