Our weekly word study will be based on spelling patterns or word parts (such as prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin word parts) to build students' understanding of how words are structured and to help them apply spelling patterns in their written work.
We will also include several "No Excuse Words" in our weekly study. These words may not follow spelling patterns but are common, useful, or important words that intermediate students should know and spell correctly in their writing.
We will also build vocabulary using the texts we read. We will "collect" words by creating a Frayer model graphic organizer in students' words and writing notebooks. The words will also be part of the word study workstation in which they will use the words for a variety of activities and games.
Skills for determining the meanings of unknown words will include use of context clues, looking at familiar word parts (such as prefixes, suffixes, or Greek & Latin roots/affixes), asking an expert, and using word reference tools. My favorite online reference tool is vocabulary.com.
Students will build domain-specific vocabulary during social studies, science, and math.
Students will write narrative, expository, and opinion pieces through guided instruction and during independent writing times.
We will strengthen students' writing with mentor sentences from our shared reading, small group and individual writing meetings, and a fun book called Woe is I, Jr: The Younger Grammarphobes Guide to Better English.
