Math

Students will focus on five main areas of math in 5th grade.

1. Operations and Algebra
   • OA will include analyzing patterns and interpreting algebraic expressions
2. Number and Operations in Base Ten
   • NBT will include place value, operations with whole numbers, and operations with decimals.
3. Numbers and Fractions
   • NF will include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions.
4. Measurement and Data
   • MD will include measurement units from the customary and metric systems and understanding volume of rectangular prisms.
5. Geometry
   • G will include the coordinate plane and classifying quadrilaterals.

Students will use mathematical practices to solve problems with effective and efficient strategies. Our goal is to understand math concepts and develop identities as mathematicians. We are not just answer-getters.

We will utilize a guided math framework, so students will receive much of their math instruction and practice in small flexible groups. Practice, reinforcement of concepts, and extension activities will be part of math workstations.
