AIG

  • AIG stands for Academically or Intellectually Gifted. Academically Gifted learners are good a school; they do well in the academic areas of reading, math, or both. Intellectually Gifted learners have shown they have the aptitude to perform well in read, math, or both areas.
  • At Poplar Springs, AIG services are provided mainly through cluster grouping with differentiation in the regular classroom. Cluster grouping means that students identified as gifted are assigned to a mixed ability classroom that contains a group of at least four gifted learners so they have academic peers all day. Differentiation means that the classroom teacher makes instructional changes to meet the needs of AIG learners in their classrooms.
  • Our 5th grade classroom is the AIG cluster class for our grade level. Mrs. Rose is the AIG specialist at Poplar Springs. She will serve 5th grade AIG students as part of their daily learning experiences - AIG reading students will have services during small group reading/ELA workstation time. AIG math students will have differentiated instruction during whole group math and math small group/workstation time.
  • Ms. Petree's classroom is the AIG cluster for 4th grade. She will differentiate for 4th grade AIG learners in her mixed abilities classroom.
  • Some of the differentiated learning strategies Mrs. Rose and Ms. Petree use to meet the needs of gifted and advanced learners include:
      • Pretesting to determine what AIG students already know and letting them move on when they show mastery.
      • Differentiating students' learning experiences by changing the pace, method of delivery, learning product, and/or complexity.
      • Offering extended learning opportunities such as special projects, opportunities to participate in contests (such as the math fair), and other challenge activities.
      • Letting gifted students work together so they are interacting with academic and intellectual peers for at least part of the school day.
      • Giving students choice in their learning such as what they read, what they research, and how they use their learning time when they have demonstrated mastery of a grade level concept or skill (student created projects).
