Alphabet Soup

My second graders got to PAINT!!! First I gave them a white paper plate. With crayons, we put some letters down.  We added some squares and dots to represent pepper and carrots, there may be some onions too.  Then, using crayons and water color paints, we painted yellow over our letters. We also designed a table cloth with crayons and water paints. They noticed that the crayons repelled the water paints. We thought that was really cool.

After that we glued down our plate and added a napkin to the table cloth. We couldn't forget the spoon.  We also talked about shadows and where they would be. Using chalk we added the shadows..

Materials: 11by18 White paper, wht. plate, napkins, crayons, water colors, ruler to make lines, paint brush, and glue.

Snowman Stamp

For about 8 years, we here in the Art room make Christmas cards for the local hospital.  Each class has a different theme.

This year's 2rd grade made a snowman themed stamp.  We were donated  poster crayons. They are  a little more vibrant than regular crayons.  They placed their snowman half off the sheet .  A different way of using space.  They could design their snowman anyway they wanted.

Materials: Black  11 by 11  construction paper. poster board crayons .and Scissors

Heart Graph

With this project, I talked to my 2nd graders about warm and cool colors.  Because it was the month of "LOVE". I had them make a heart (they could make up to 4) in the center of their paper. We then measured  out a grid using our rulers. A lot of them had a little problem with this.  Measuring in ART? That brought  on a conversation about tools we can use in art.

Then they where asked to color the whole sheet. The outside of the heart is done in cold colors. The heart itself, colored in warm colors.

For this project I had about 4 students that were on eLearning.  So they did this on there own and with what they had at home.

I think they all did an amazing job!!

Materials: 11by9.5 White paper, Color pencils or crayons, ruler to make lines.

I think they did a wonderful job.
