Today we had our GFoL experience where the children WOW'ed us and Dean the teacher! He said how impressed and outstanding the children were with their knowledge and team work! Dean did some preteaching to work out what they already knew by showing paintings of the fire. He then showed us how to make a wall using sticks and weaving bendy sticks inbetween - This is called wottle and daub. After, we made a structure using only 2 materials (sticks, clay, stones and tin foil). The children had to decide in their teams which materials they were going to use to make a new structure to keep Thomas Farriner (the baker) dry. This was to represent the oven/bakery but we were getting short on time! They children all understood the brief and fully enjoyed the experience.
We retold The Great Fire of London together to find out what happened. I wonder if the children can remember anything that happened? What day did the fire start? Where did the Fire start? Who ordered the houses to be pulled down? When did the fire stop? What was the name of the Cathedral that got burnt? How many houses were destroyed in the fire?
This term we are studying ' The Great Fire of London.' We are using videos and texts to learn all about what happened. We have also invited an external company to come into school to help us to learn about this history event by having a hands on experience outside. So far the children have shown so much interest into this key history event and been great history detectives already. Take a look...
This term we have started our History topic learning all about the famous lady, Florence Nightingale. The children have only had 2 lessons so far but are absolutely loving learning about her, showing great listening skills. They are asking curious questions and wanted to find out more - great historians year 1s!
Please find a great PowerPoint below sharing the lessons we have done so far learning about 'The Lady of the Lamp'.
Today was our last session about seasides and we wrapped up by having a discussion about which seaside holiday we would prefer. The children came up with some great ideas but most children preferred holidays in the present day due to reasons such as; swimming with floats and rubber rings, eating ice cream, getting suntans and wearing costumes, going on aeroplanes and enjoying arcade games.
Today in our history lesson, the children created two scenes from the past and present. They had to sort the images onto the right beach scene and had to explain why they went there. Some children said that they didn't wear bikinis in the past. That they enjoyed donkey rides. They didn't have rubber rings or beach balls over 100 year ago. The didn't have arcades or rides. The children have shown great understanding of the difference between past seaside holidays to present day.
We have started our topic of 'Seaside' in history this term and the children have loved learning about them!
We have studied images from over 100 years ago and looked at the similarities and differences between holidays from the past to present day. The children have worked through statements to see what is true and what is false, have drawn a picture of a seaside holiday from the past, and one from the present day too. Some children have shared their photos of them on holiday as well which has been lovely seeing.
