Slotted Animals
The children have worked really hard designing and creating their slotted animals. They had to show real perseverance and determination as the animals didn't always want to stand up!
DT & Science - Little Sprout House
The children really enjoyed creating their Little Sprout Houses today. We asked them to think about who they were creating their house for and about colours and designs that person would like. We also discussed the tools they would need.
One of the fiddly jobs was cutting out the middle of the Sprout House and they all did so well!
When taped to a window, the sandwich bag creates a mini green house that makes warm, moist air from the sunlight shining through the window and the water in the cotton balls. The seeds should start to sprout quite quickly!
We have had a fantastic DT day today where we have studied different structures. We took photographs in our outside environments of the different structures we found and discussed their purposes. We looked at how the structures were made and what materials have been used. We then were given a task of, make, design and build a house/den for an animal. Below you will see how we explored different building materials and then how we designed and made our structures. We then ended our day by evaluating how well it went, what we would do differently and what we enjoyed the most about our DT lesson.
This afternoon in our DT session, we got to MAKE our design brief which was to: Design, make and evaluate pancakes for a friend to enjoy to eat. The children remembered the recipe and method really well from our English lessons and we got to make them! They were super excited and LOVED it! They then got to chop and cut the toppings for their friend to enjoy. Unfortunately, the supermarkets (7 in total we visited!!) were all out of strawberries and raspberries, but the children were very grown up about choosing different toppings to try!
In our DT this week, we have had a design brief which states: To design, make and evaluate pancake toppings for our friend to enjoy to eat (on pancake day!) We had to ask questions to our friend to find out what toppings they liked and then design a delicious looking pancake for them!
We have had a lovely DT Boats STEM day. The children started the day thinking about the different kinds of boats that there are. They predicted which of 4 boats would be the quickest and we talked about the shape and size of the boats. We learned some new words - surface area and streamlined.
Then they had a go at designing their own boats out of tin foil. Their design brief was to make a boat that held as many marbles as possible. They had a go at a second iteration to see if they could improve on their first one. Some boats didn't hold any marbles but one held 72! The children quickly learned which design worked best.
Finally, they had a go at making a balloon powered boat. They loved watching them go across the water.
