I foster all modes of communication interpretive, interpersonal and presentational speaking and writing, while practicing reading, writing and speaking in the target language in my assignments. In summative assignments I ask my students to combine their writing with their speaking by making use of technology. Three examples of student assignments are found below.
This assignment completed by a Novice German I student, was to create a multimedia presentation and be able to speak about different activities in their daily lives. Students took pictures of themselves with their stuffed animal for one week and created a story entitled "The adventures of the Stuffed Animal". This form of assignment not only fosters the student's writing but also their speaking ability while utilizing technology in a creative way.
This next assignment was completed by an Intermediate German II student. After a unit of German "Wechselpräpositionen" - two-way-prepositions which can take the accusative case or the dative case, students created a video in which they demonstrate how sentences change when they use the 9 different prepositions (in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, zwischen, neben) either in the accusative or the dative cases.
Below you will find the script with the English translation.
This project is the work of an Honors German IV student. In a unit centered around "Identity - Identität", the students read and discussed the poem "Wer bin ich" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. As a summative assignment students wrote their own mirroring poem about their own identity. This poem was then submitted to Saint Joseph's award winning student magazine "The Vignette" and published in the 2020 issue.
Translation:
A 12th grade student in the Honors German IV class produced an example of a CSI (Color, Symbol, Picture)-activity which can be found to the left. The translation is found below. The original prompt was a text, which students read, about the use of digital media. The CSI thinking routine asks students to identify and extract the main ideas from their reading/ viewing/listening prompt. CSI pushes students to make connections and think metaphorically. Metaphors allow learners to develop understanding by connecting to something they already know.
Farbe (Color):
I think the color blue represents digital media as the logos for Twitter and Facebook are blue. Mark Zuckerberg was color blind and the color blue was easy for him to see.
Symbol (Symbol):
Likes are used in digital media as for example Facebook, Reddit, Youtube and so on. Likes determine now-a-days how popular something is. The "thumbs-up" symbolizes also that technology is good for schools.
Bild (picture):
Laptops and Tablets should replace books in schools. Technology is more variable than books. There are multiple ways to access Information with technology.
