Self-paced slides are designed for students to navigate and interact with directly. The most basic versions use Google Slides, the same as a conventional presentation. The important differences are not in the software used to create it, but in the way the presentation is designed and distributed to students. Clickthroughs are self-paced and interactive.
As an alternative to producing a video, a “clickthrough” offers several distinct advantages. Students are able to control the pacing on their own, which is useful for content with complex visuals that take time to parse. For faculty, production is often faster, and the logistics are easier to manage. Clickthroughs can be edited collaboratively and changed without needing to export new versions and update every page on which they are embedded. A change in the source file will propagate to everywhere the clickthrough appears, making it easier to maintain and update content in the future.
If you begin scripting a video and find that your narration is frequently redundant with the imagery on screen, a clickthrough may be for you.
This slide deck walks students through the Single Index Model. Because it is self-paced, students can examine the relevent equations as long as they need to. They will only progress when they are comfortable they understand each step.
This clickthrough includes several moments of reflection, asking students to consider the material and formulate an answer to a question before it is revealed.
