All but the simplest interactive modules will require some level of project management. Some very-well established platforms, such as H5P, may be straightforward to deploy. But the more customized the process, and the more sophisticated the platform in which it’s built, the more important it will be to establish a clear plan and, possibly, identify a specific budget and resources for its development.
The timeline for a project can vary immensely, as well. A single, self-paced interactive based on clearly established learning goals and existing content might take a few weeks. In contrast, development for a full course design may need to begin multiple semesters ahead of its launch.
Fully developed plans will look a little different for every project, but it’s helpful to look at some sample milestones to visualize what the process can look like long-term.
Gather initial input from stakeholders to understand the project scope, audience, and goals.
Establish clear, measurable learning objectives aligned with the project’s goals.
Identify the format and delivery method of the completed project.
Complete a detailed outline of content, including modules, topics, resources, and their place in relation to live meetups.
Develop a prototype or sample module to test design concepts and get feedback.
Create and approve storyboards or scripts for key content elements, such as lessons or instructional modules.
Start creating course materials, including multimedia and interactive content.
Conduct quality checks on produced content to ensure accuracy and alignment with objectives.
Host approved content and ensure students have access.
Complete ongoing assessments of the project during implementation to adjust content and strategies as needed.
Establish a plan for future development iterations.
In a full project plan, these milestones (and any others) will have dates attached to them to ensure the project stays on track and all contributors are clear on their responsibilities and contributions.
