Review and summarise notes from the last week. What are you going to have to remember?
Review and respond to feedback from teachers.
Try to read ahead or read around your topics. Pick something up from the library, search on Google or use the further reading subject links at: https://sites.google.com/stbarts.co.uk/virtual-induction-day/home
Create a revision guide for a topic.
Write your own exam question – then answer it.
Tidy up your folders and print out copies of exam specs and past papers. Read examiners reports.
Maintain a keywords list for all your subjects. What new terms have you encountered? What do they mean?
Work with a partner to test each other’s understanding.
If you know that writing lengthy responses in timed conditions is your weakness, set yourself writing challenges. Time yourself writing on a topic for 10 minutes. Do some more reading and then start again. This time write for 15 minutes. Try to improve your original and write more.
Research indicates that ‘The best time to restudy something is after you have forgotten it, when it is no longer familiar.’ What have you started to forget? If it’s slipping out of your memory, it’s time to return to it.
Talk to a Subject Rep about how to perform at your best in a particular subject. Contact details are on the noticeboard and blog.
Check online for study discussions and help: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/
Go further – search for articles, books and journals outside your reading list: http://jurn.org/; https://scholar.google.co.uk/; https://www.amazon.co.uk
If you are looking for a more long-term project to support your academic work, and want to make your job/UCAS application stand out, why not start a MOOC: https://www.futurelearn.com/ or https://www.mooc-list.com/
Crucial to the success of any sixth form student is the ability to manage your time. Some find this easier than others.
It is most important that you keep fit and healthy and continue to participate in a range of activities both within and outside school. No one is expecting you to work all the time, but to be able to really enjoy your ‘time off’ you need to be organised about when you are going to get things done. School is open from 07.30-18.00 so try arriving early or staying late on at least one occasion each week.
I would suggest that you populate this grid with your timetabled lessons and then try to identify when you are going to complete independent study and identify what you are going to prioritise in each session. Research suggests that splitting an hour between two different activities/subjects might work better than an hour on just one.
You should be looking to complete at least five hours of independent study each week for each subject. This should include IS tasks and revision, reading forward and looking back.
