Operation Wallacea
Joining Operation Wallacea is a chance for students to conduct research with academics, join field training courses and make a real difference around the world.
Alongside our group expeditions, we also offer individual options for students to join us as a research assistant who are finishing school and looking to get involved in conservation before higher education, or those planning on having a gap year!
With opportunities based in the UK, Europe, South East Asia, Africa and Central America, and virtually, we feel these opportunities can cater for everyone. Whether they are looking to gain a wider range of field experience for a future career, looking to develop their report writing skills and knowledge of statistical programmes or looking to get involved in wildlife conservation!

We are writing from The Wilberforce Society, a student-run public policy think-tank based in the University of Cambridge. We would like to invite your sixth-forms students to join us at The Wilberforce Society Conference 2024, held on Saturday 24 February 2024 at the Cambridge Union (access via Park St). Our conference will host a small-group public policy workshop specifically catered to sixth-form students, as well as a series of panel discussions on key public policy issues, allowing your students to hear from thought leaders in academia, government and business.
The theme for TWS Conference 2024 is 'Did we just create a monster or a miracle? - The challenges of regulating AI'. Through the policy workshop and panel discussions on the policies developed around AI in the areas of education, economics & work, and ethics we hope to encourage a stronger appreciation of the workings of public policy, and greater awareness and engagement on these pertinent national issues.
Please let us know via email (conference@wilberforcesociety.co.uk) if this opportunity is of interest to your students. Attendance at the workshop and conference can be organised as a school trip, or alternatively, students can purchase individual tickets to attend the event. If you will be sending students as a school, we would be grateful if you could let us know how many students you will be sending. Otherwise, we would appreciate it if you could pass this invite on to your sixth-form students. If they would like to sign up, we ask that they fill both the Google Form to express their interest, and sign up via the Ticket Purchase link:
Expression of Interest — https://forms.gle/WceWNivXpoHNQmuG6
Ticket Purchase — https://payment.thewilberforcesociety.co.uk
Tickets will be priced at £7/student, though students on free school meals are eligible for subsidised tickets at £5/student. The cost will include both attendance at the workshop and conference, as well as individual packed lunches. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide transportation to the conference venue, so if you plan to organise a school trip to Cambridge, that will remain your responsibility as a participating school. Please also note that we will rely on you as school to inform the parents or guardians of participating students and to ask them for permission to participate. If you are attending with a group of students or if one or more of your pupils sign up for the conference individually, we will be in touch again to make sure that all students have permission to attend and that you as a school retain your responsibility to your students.
Please find enclosed the schedule and some additional information on the policy workshop.
Do let us know if you have further queries. We hope to see you and your students at TWS Conference 2024.
The Brilliant Club, a UK-wide charity that supports less advantaged students to access the most competitive universities, and succeed when they get there.
Disadvantage does not disappear when students walk through the doors of a university. Some students are less likely to get good grades in their first year, more likely to drop out before their second year and less likely to graduate with a 1st or 2:1 in their final degree.
Our programme Join the Dots is completely free for schools, and is designed to support students as they apply for and transition to university. The programme is run in partnership with universities across the country, including King’s College London, Durham University, Liverpool John Moores University and Goldsmiths, University of London with more to be announced in the next few months!
Join the Dots runs in two parts.
UniPrep supports Year 12 and 13 students with university application and preparation, through a series of online resources. This also includes live webinars in July and August on preparing for and life at university.
Students who attend one of our partner universities then receive academic coaching in 1:1 and peer group sessions led by a PhD Coach, as well as advice and guidance as they settle in.
How to sign up?
To get started with Join the Dots, complete our sign-up form and we’ll be in touch with all the details you’ll need to share with your students.
