Entering Kindergarten

Focus: Early number sense & counting

Incoming Kindergarten students should know how to:

• Count objects to 10 (and higher with support)

• Recognize written numerals 0–10

• Compare groups: more, fewer, same

• Sort objects by color, shape, or size

• Identify basic shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle

• Add and subtract within 5 using objects

• Use position words (above, below, beside)

Enrichment Activities

Technology Free:

• Counting walk: Count objects on a nature walk — acorns, cracks in the sidewalk, birds. Record with tally marks on paper.

• Shape scavenger hunt: Find circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles around the house and yard. Draw or trace what you find.

• Sorting bins: Sort household objects (buttons, dried pasta, coins) by color, size, and shape. Count each group.
