Focus: Proportional reasoning & expressions

Incoming Grade 7 students should know how to:

• Understand ratios and unit rates

• Add, subtract, multiply, divide negative numbers

• Write and evaluate simple algebraic expressions

• Find percent of a number and understand unit rate

• Calculate area of basic shapes

• Fluently divide fractions

• Use positive and negative numbers

• Solve one-step equations and inequalities

• Analyze statistical data distributions

Required Summer Math Assignment

Students will be assigned IXL Skills in the Summer Math Google Classroom in July and August. Please join the Grade 7 Summer Math classroom, the code is s4daleob.

Enrichment Activities

Technology Free:

• Proportional relationship tables: Pick a unit rate (e.g., $12/hour) and fill in a table of values. Graph the points on graph paper.

• Percent scavenger hunt: Find sales, tips, and discounts in store ads. Calculate the actual savings or cost.

• Algebra balance puzzles: Draw a balance scale. Put expressions on each side and find what value makes them equal.

Digital:

• Prodigy Math: Game-based adaptive platform with a free tier; curriculum aligns to grade level.

• Mathigon / Polypad: Free virtual manipulatives for fractions, arrays, and number lines — excellent visual tool. Includes Algebra Tiles: Virtual algebra tiles for visualizing expressions and equations — bridge to 8th grade.
