Focus: Multi-digit operations & fraction arithmetic

Incoming Grade 5 students should know how to:

• Know multiplication and division facts through 12 × 12

• Multiply multi-digit whole numbers

• Divide 4-digit by 1-digit numbers

• Add and subtract fractions with like denominators

• Compare decimals to hundredths

• Find area of rectangles with whole numbers

• Understand factors, multiples, primes, and composites

• Compare and generate equivalent fractions

• Measure and classify angles

Enrichment Activities

Technology Free:

• Times table card game: Use a deck of cards (Ace=1, face cards=10). Flip two cards and multiply. Play war — highest product wins.

• Fraction strips: Cut paper strips into equal parts to build a visual fraction kit. Compare and order fractions.

• Garden area project: Design a dream garden on graph paper. Calculate area and perimeter of each bed.

• Khan Academy — Grade 3 review: Target the multiplication and fractions units to solidify incoming 4th grade skills.

• Prodigy Math: Game-based adaptive platform with a free tier; curriculum aligns to grade level.

• Mathigon / Polypad: Free virtual manipulatives for fractions, arrays, and number lines — excellent visual tool.
