Incoming Grade 6 students should know how to:

  • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators

  • Multiply fractions by whole numbers and fractions

• Find greatest common factor and LCM

• Understand and use basic exponents

• Convert measurement units

• Find volume of rectangular prisms

• Plot points on a coordinate plane

• Analyze numerical patterns

Required Summer Math Assignment

Students are assigned IXL Skills in the Summer Math Google Classroom that will go toward their first trimester grade. Skills will be assigned in the first weeks of July and August.

Enrichment Activities

Technology Free:

• Unit rate shopping: Compare grocery store prices using unit rates (price per ounce). Who finds the best deal?

• Negative number number line: Draw a number line from −20 to 20. Play a card game: red = negative, black = positive; move along the line.

• GCF factoring puzzles: Write expressions like 12 + 18 and 30 − 24 as GCF × (sum/difference). Look for patterns.

Digital:

• Prodigy Math: Game-based adaptive platform with a free tier; curriculum aligns to grade level.

• Mathigon / Polypad: Free virtual manipulatives for fractions, arrays, and number lines — excellent visual tool.

• Desmos Graphing Calculator: Explore the coordinate plane visually. Try graphing y = x, y = 2x, y = x + 3 and notice what changes.
