Focus: Functions, geometry & linear equations

Incoming Grade 8 students should know how to:

• Solve multi-step equations with one variable

• Understand and apply proportional relationships

• Plot and interpret graphs in all four quadrants

• Understand square roots and cube roots

• Solve geometry problems involving area, surface area, and volume

• Calculate percent increase/decrease

• Use rational numbers fluently

• Draw and interpret scale drawings

• Understand probability concepts

• Use equations to model real-world situations

Required Summer Math Assignment

Students will be assigned IXL Skills in the Summer Math Google Classroom in July and August. Please join the Grade 8 Summer Math classroom, the code is 6fs2pb2w.

Enrichment Activities

Technology Free:

• Linear equation graphing: Create an x/y table for equations like y = 2x − 1, graph on paper, and identify slope and y-intercept.

• Pythagorean theorem puzzles: Draw right triangles on graph paper, label sides, and verify a² + b² = c² by counting squares.

• Real-world systems of equations: Two lemonade stands charge different prices. Write equations and find when earnings would be equal.

Digital:

• Prodigy Math: Game-based adaptive platform with a free tier; curriculum aligns to grade level.

• Mathigon / Polypad: Free virtual manipulatives for fractions, arrays, and number lines — excellent visual tool. Includes Algebra Tiles: Virtual algebra tiles for visualizing expressions and equations — bridge to 8th grade.

• Desmos graphing: Desmos for visual exploration of linear functions.

• Khan Academy: Khan's 7th grade units on equations.
