Rationale: Children’s lives are rooted in their families and communities. Understanding that families exist at the center of their culture, language, home life, and community is essential to building strong connections with children and their families. Celebrating and respecting diversity of ability, language, values, customs, traditions, expectations, and attitudes helps early childhood professionals offer developmentally and culturally appropriate learning opportunities that help children learn and thrive. Understanding that children develop in the context of different family structures and dynamics helps early childhood professionals to honor the needs, strengths, and challenges experienced by each child. Implementing the Strengthening Families Protective Factors framework helps to increase protective factors and prevent child abuse and neglect. When early childhood professionals work collaboratively with community organizations to meet the needs of children and families and to encourage community involvement, we help to optimize a child’s growth, development, and learning.
