Sustainability must become a core value in everything we do. As a community we are committed to developing our core campus in a sustainable fashion that preserves what we cherish, that demonstrates leadership in the university’s commitment to be a good environmental steward and that safeguards the ability for future generations to thrive at Stanford.
—John L. Hennessy
Former President, Stanford University (2000 - 2016)
In pursuing its academic mission, Stanford University is committed to being a leader in research, teaching, and action of environmental sustainability.
Sustainable Stanford is a university-wide effort to reduce our environmental impact, preserve resources, and show sustainability in action. Please assist us in this effort by utilizing the clearly labeled paper and bottle/container recycling containers. Any paper plates or napkins, along with food waste, should be placed in the composting bins. We encourage you to refill your compostable cup or personal water bottle rather than opening plastic bottles. All water fountains on campus have filtered water. Tap water in Northern California is safe to drink.
