In preparation for your travel arrangements, here are frequently asked questions regarding the visa requirements for the program:
Which visa should I apply for?
The proper visa for the program is the B1/B2 visa. The visa waiver program has also worked for participants in the past.
Why not a student visa?
A student visa does not apply because you are not technically a student at Stanford. As SEP is a non-degree-granting program, you will not have student status.
When should I apply for a visa?
We highly recommend applying for a visa as soon as possible. The process can take up to 4 months to secure a visa.
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) & Visa Waiver Program (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ )
Visa Waiver Program
You are a citizen or eligible national of a Visa Waiver Program country (please see below).
You are currently not in possession of a visitor's visa.
Your travel is for 90 days or less.
You plan to travel to the United States for business or pleasure.
You want to apply for a new authorization for one person or a group of applications for two or more persons.
What if I can't obtain a visa due to COVID-19?
The latest date for receiving a full refund is September 22. After that, if you are restricted from entering the U.S. due to circumstances beyond your control (whether it be on the part of the U.S. or the country you are coming from), we would work with you individually and be flexible in finding the best solution.
