Google sends out an update to the Chromebook operating system, ChromeOS, about every 4 weeks. We have chosen to limit the updates to student devices to approximately every 12 weeks. We will try to time these updates to align with school holidays so that that students in the 1:1 program will have plenty of time to update their device over the holiday break and have it ready to go when school resumes.
Why does Google send out updates? The ChromeOS updates generally include one of more of the following:
security issue fixes
performance and stability improvements
new features
The chart on the left shows how you can update the ChromeOS on your Chromebook.
Performing the updates at home will generally be much faster than doing so at school, and it is a great idea to see if an update is available at least once each holiday weekend. Don't worry it you see a message that "Updates are blocked by your Administrator". That just means that we have not released the update to students yet. The updates will likely be available on the following dates:
December Downloading the update at home on a single device will take just 5 minutes or so, but trying to do it at school while 50+ students are using the same wi-fi network to download the update or do school work can take 15-30 minutes. So if you take a few minutes to do it at home, then you will save yourself a lot of time spend waiting at school and your Chromebook will work better at school when you need it.
