Instructor: Dr. Peterson
Grade Level: 11-12
Graduation requirement fulfilled? Yes, “writing” elective.
This is a dual credit course for which students earn both credit at MCC and Louisa-Muscatine. Students will acquire and apply basic skills of essay analysis. Students will gain an understanding of the process of writing and be able to apply strategies of description, narration, exemplification, process, comparison-contrast, cause-effect, definition, and classification-division in their own writing. We will also discuss, analyze, and apply various rhetorical devices including exigence, audience, purpose/tone, ethos, pathos, logos, language, imagery, diction, and syntax. See the syllabus for specific guidelines and due dates. It is a class for college credit so reading and writing demands exceed those of a typical high school English class.
For an outline of the class, view this pacing guide which shows units, major texts, and how the class aligns to the Common Core.
