Welcome to 2020 - 2021 Sunday Prep Class for 6th Grade Monday! We will have a combination of LIVE and RECORDED Sessions. Live sessions will be held on select Sundays at 10:30am. All Monday night students are invited to attend the live classes if they are able.

Chapter 18 (258 - 266)
Vocabulary Words:
The Communion of Saints includes the pilgrim Church on Earth, those being purified in Purgatory and the blessed already in Heaven.
Heaven - the full joy of living eternally in God’s presence.
Purgatory - state of final cleansing after death and before entering into Heaven. Purgatory helps the soul prepare for a life with God.
Hell - eternal separation from God because of a choice to turn away from him and not seek forgiveness.
Corporal works of mercy are actions that show care for the physical needs of others.
Spiritual works of mercy are actions that address the needs of the heart, mind and soul.
Intercession is a form of prayer that involves praying to God on behalf of another; also called Intercessory prayer.

Chapter 18 (244 - 252)
Vocabulary Words:
Domestic Church - name for the Catholic family, because it is the community of Christians in the home. God made the family to be the first place we learn about loving others and following Christ.
Temperance - the cardinal virtue that helps us use moderation, be disciplined, and have self-control.
Chastity - moral virtue and Fruit of the Holy Spirit that helps us express sexuality in the right ways for our call in life. In religious life or Holy Orders, chastity includes being celibate.
Modesty - a moral virtue and one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit that helps us to dress, talk and move in appropriate ways.

Chapter 17 (234 -242)
Vocabulary Words:
Vocation - the purpose for which God made us and a particular way to answer his call, whether as a lay person (married or single), a member of a religious community, or a member of the ordained ministry
Holy Orders - the Sacrament in which a baptized man is ordained to teach the faithful, lead divine worship and govern the Church; ordained ministers serve as bishops, priests or deacons.
Magisterium - the teaching office of the Church, which is all of the bishops in union with the Pope. The Magisterium has the teaching authority to interpret the Word of God found in Scripture and Tradition.
Consecrated religious life - a state of life lived in community and characterized by the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Chapter 15 (209 -218)
Vocabulary Words:
Conversion- the continual process of becoming the people God intends us to be through change and growth. It is a response to God’s love and forgiveness
The sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist are called the Sacraments of Initiation because they mark the entry into Christian Life
Evangelization- giving witness to the faith by proclaiming the Good News of Christ through words and deeds in a way that invites people to accept the Gospel. You are called to give witness to your faith through your words and actions
Eucharist- the Sacrament in which Jesus gives himself and the bread and wine become his Body and Blood
Transubstantiation- the process by which the power of the Holy Spirit and the words of the priest transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ
Real Presence- the phrase used to describe that Jesus is really and truly present in the Eucharist (Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity)
Tabernacle- that special place in the church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved after Mass for those who are ill or for Eucharistic Adoration

Chapter 15 (209 -218)
Vocabulary Words:
Sin is an offense against God as well as against reason, truth and conscience.
A Venial sin weakens but does not destroy your relationship with God. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is a means of healing for those who have fallen into venial sin.
A Mortal Sin is a very serious sin by which someone turns away completely from God.
Conscience - the God-given ability that helps us judge whether actions are right or wrong. It is important for us to know God’s laws so our conscience can help us make good decisions.
Sacramental Seal - the rule that a priest is not to share anything he hears in confession.

Vocabulary Words:
Justice- means giving God and other people what is due to them
Virtue - good spiritual habits that strengthen you and enable you to do what is right and good. They develop over time with our practice and openness to God’s grace.
Grace - God’s free, loving gift of his own life and help to do what he calls us to do.
The Beatitudes- eight blessings recounted by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew
Peace - state of calm or harmony when things are in their proper order and people settle problems with kindness and justice
Three Prophets:
Hosea - One day God would heal the sinners and love them freely
Amos - One day God would restore his People, Israel and return them to their land.
Micah - The path to righteousness is simple.
Social sin - unjust structures that can occur as the result of personal sin. One person’s sin can cause others to sin and the sin can spread through a whole society.
Common Good - the good of everyone with particular concern for those who might be most vulnerable to harm.

Vocabulary Words:
Transfiguration- the revelation of Jesus in glory to the Apostles Peter, James, and John.
Morality- living in right relationship with God, yourself and others. Putting your beliefs into action.
Beatitudes - teachings of Jesus that show the way to true happiness and tell the way to live in God’s Kingdom now and always.
Charity- the theological virtue of love. It directs us to love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves, for the love of God.
Precepts of the Church- some of the minimum requirements given by Church leaders for deepening your relationship with God and the Church. The Precepts are listed on page 317 of our textbook.

Vocabulary Words:
Epistles are letters written by Paul and several of the other Apostles. There are twenty-one letters in the New Testament.
There are four Marks of the Church. The Letters of the New Testament show that the Church is one, holy, catholic and apostolic.
One: Even though all people are different, we can all work together in unity as the Body of Christ. The Church is made up of many different people from all over the world who all believe the same thing: only one true God, confession of our sins and the celebration of one baptism.
Holy: The church is holy because it is set apart for God and his purposes.
Catholic: The word Catholic means “containing the whole” or “universal”
Apostolic: The Church is Apostolic because the teaching authority of the Church comes directly from Jesus and the Chosen Apostles.

Pentecost Sunday - Fifty days after Easter when God sent the Holy Spirit to the Apostles.
The Church’s mission is to announce the Good News of God’s Kingdom.
Apostolic Succession means that the bishops, in a direct line of succession from the Apostles, receive the authority and power of Jesus to lead and teach the Church.
The word martyr describes those who suffered because of their faith in Jesus.

Decalogue - another name for the Ten Commandments; the summary of laws that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. They tell us what must be done to live by God’s covenant.
Natural Moral Law: rules about goodness that are written in our hearts and are natural to follow. However, our awareness of natural law can be clouded by Original Sin.
Kingdom of God - God’s rule of peace, justice and love that exists in Heaven, but has not yet come in its fullness on Earth.
New Commandments - Jesus command for his discipline to love one another as he has loved us.

Divine Revelation is the process by which God makes himself known. The chief sources of Divine Revelation are Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.
Sacred Scripture are the Word of God written by humans acting under the Holy Spirit's inspiration and guidance; another name for the bible.
Sacred Tradition is God's word to the Church, safeguarded by the Apostles and their successors, the bishops handing down verbally in her Creeds, Sacraments and other teachings to future generations.
