This 2-day course focuses on teaching literacy skills to students with significant disabilities. With the mindset that ALL students can learn to read and write, participants will be provided with strategies for teaching emergent and conventional literacy to their most complex learners. The foundation for this professional development includes the research-based instructional approaches in the book, Comprehensive Literacy for All; Teaching Student with Significant Disabilities to Read and Write (Erickson, K.A., & Koppenhaver, D.A. (2020). Reference materials provided by experts in the field of literacy, learning and AAC will be cited throughout. In addition, time for practice, reflection and self-assessment will be allotted.
