Instruction in this area involves both explicit teaching AND incidental opportunities, and focuses on

• Alphabet knowledge (ability to distinguish letters shapes, name them, write them, identify the sounds they make)

• Phonological awareness (ability to identify and manipulate sounds in spoken language)
