Background

Mrs. Tuohy grew up in Pleasanton and graduated from Foothill High School. After high school, she attended junior college and graduated from Diablo Valley College with an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. Her passion for art lead her to pursue a B.A. in Studio Art at San Jose State University. During her time at SJSU, she concentrated on metalsmithing and art education.

She started her teaching career as an Art 1 and Crafts teacher at Andrew Hill High School (AH) in San Jose. Throughout her years at AH, she took on leadership roles acting as department chair for eight years, as lead teacher for the Multimedia Academy for six years, and one year as District Sector Lead for the CTE Arts, Media, and Entertainment academies. In 2017 she received recognition for her leadership and contributions to the district’s CTE career pathways. After fourteen years of serving AH’s community and experience teaching Art 1, Art 2, Crafts, Photo, Photo 2, Multimedia 1, Multimedia 3, and IB Visual Arts SL/HL, she decided to give back to the community she resides with her husband and son. She is elated to teach at DVHS!

Teaching Philosophy

Mrs. Tuohy believes in creating an environment for students to gain confidence by exploring creativity and self-discovery. Her curriculum introduces skills and opens choices for students to explore different possibilities. She believes using art is therapeutic and is an excellent outlet for students. It has helped her through challenging times.

Favorite Artist

When students ask Mrs. Tuohy, who is your favorite artist?” many artists flash into her mind.  The one that stands out the most is Frida Kahlo. Her discovery of using art as an outlet after a tragic accent helped Frida realize her true passion. After seeing Kahlo’s artwork in person, Mrs. Tuohy fell in love with the artist’s work, seeing the magnitude of emotions expressed with scale, color, and symbolism.
